Composer Jeff Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin returned to redo their songs from the stage adaptation while Richmond composed the film’s score. Mean Girls Plot Summary
Mean Girls story deals with a sixteen-year-old Cady Heron, homeschooled in Kenya, returning to the United States with her mother. Having a hard time adjusting once Cady enters North Shore High School, it is not until she meets Janis ʻImiʻike and Damian Hubbard, who alert her to the presence of a dreaded clique that just so happens to be called “Plastics.” It is led by manipulative Regina George, as well as by an insecure sidekick, Gretchen Wieners, and bubbly but unintelligent Karen Shetty.
When Regina decides to sponsor Cady’s membership to their group, Janis recognizes a way to gain access into the Plastics’ lives and advises Cady to play spy. The further Cady becomes enmeshed with the Plastics, the more she becomes attracted to Aaron Samuels, who was once Regina’s boyfriend. This creates complications when Regina begins to flirt with Aaron as a way to remind everyone of her status.
To cause more harm, Cady plots against Regina. She comes up with various schemes against Regina, such as sabotaging her fat-loss diet and capitalizing on the weaknesses of Gretchen, to rocket-fuel her ascent to the top rung of the prestige ladder. However, in the climax of the drama, Cady gets caught in the middle between Janis and Damian as her friend and her new status with the Plastics.
The Mean Girls movie ends in a free-for-all finale when the “Burn Book,” holding secrets and rumors about students that are hurtful, is discovered. Cady learns to take ownership of the damage and repair herself through redemption so that at the end of it all, she can reconcile with her friends and find her place among them.
Mean Girls Main Cast
Mean Girls in Angourie Rice plays the role of Cady Heron, who was homeschooled and moved to the United States from Kenya. This young heroine finds herself having to submerge into the treacherous waters of high school life with the fierce queen bee Regina George played by Reneé Rapp. Auliʻi Cravalho plays Janis ʻImiʻike, Cady’s artistic friend who helps her understand the school’s social dynamics, and Jaquel Spivey plays Damian Hubbard, the loyal sidekick of Cady and Janis. Avantika Vandanapu, playing Karen Shetty, lent to Plastics that devastating and very sweetly dim-witted charm, besides Bebe Wood as Gretchen Wieners– another insecure, and fearful of losing status to Regina, like her friends.
Supporting the love life of Cady is her mother, Ms. Heron, played by Jenna Fischer. Mrs. George is perfectly clueless and is played by Busy Philipps. Tina Fey helps in bringing Ms. Norbury, the math teacher, to screen, while Tim Meadows plays the role of Principal Duvall, trying to rein everyone in and maintain order in school. Cady’s love interest, Aaron Samuels, is portrayed by Christopher Briney, who also so happens to be Regina’s ex-boyfriend. In a funny cameo, Lindsay Lohan has turned up as a moderator in the tournament of Mathletes, and Jon Hamm has made an appearance as Coach Carr, the school’s physical education instructor.
Production Insights
Development
The road to “Mean Girls” was the adaptation announced by Tina Fey in 2013, for which a stage musical was being made that premiered in 2017. Following the success of this production, Fey confirmed in January 2020 that a film adaptation was “actively in development.” A feature directorial debut for the directors, Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne, producers Lorne Michaels and Fey, who return.
Mean Girls Casting
Casting took place in December 2022, featuring a mix of newcomers and familiar faces. Reneé Rapp reprised her role as Regina after her Broadway stint. The casting process was interactive, with fans able to share their dream casts. Notably, Lindsay Lohan’s cameo became a focal point of excitement for fans of the original film.
Filming
Principal photography was done in New Jersey at Mater Dei High School, which is now a closed school, from March till April 2023. The film adaptation had to shorten the storyline for its runtime to be less than that of the stage play version and thus made some changes with some necessary cuts in terms of musical numbers as well as plot flow.
Musical Elements
Somehow, the movie still has a hint of new musical motifs: the score was rewritten and composed by Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin. However, some songs were cut or reworded in order for it to hold the attributes of the cinematic adaptation even better. Among the new compositions, “What Ifs” is highly connected because it unfolds the roller coaster of emotions which Cady perceives and gives new dimension to the plot.
The soundtrack was released on 12 January 2024 and includes all the songs and actually will comprise most of the comical and dramatic moments of the film which will eventually culminate in the overall narrative arc.
