Probably the most widely-awaited sequel of the year, Joker: Folie à Deux puts Joaquin Phoenix back behind the helmet as the iconic Joker, matched with Lady Gaga as his love interest, Harleen Quinzel (Lee). By Todd Phillips, this is a psychological thriller that infuses musical notes into the bleak atmosphere of Gotham, thus creating a dramatic twist on the legendary characters of DC Comics.
As if it’s a sequel to where the Joker of 2019 ended, the movie plunges into the psychology of Arthur Fleck and his increased influence on the underburdle of Gotham. Even as sensationalized as it might be, it did manage to place music with gritty crime thriller into a contrasting reaction from most of the critics out there. Fans of Phoenix’s Joker, however, would appreciate the detailed analysis of development of his character.

Plot
Arthur Fleck, now in custody at Arkham State Hospital, opens the movie waiting for trial for his past misdeeds. Maryanne Stewart, his attorney, intends to contend that Arthur has dissociative identity disorder and attribute his conduct to the “Joker” character. Arthur runs upon fellow patient Harleen “Lee” Quinzel during a music therapy session. Lee unveils her sinister past and respect of the Joker’s actions, which starts a risky affair between the two.
As the narrative progresses, Arthur’s trial becomes into a media event. Although Assistant District Attorney Harvey Dent wants to see Arthur brought to justice, fresh information about Lee’s actual identity throws the matter off. Once controlling her entrance into Arthur’s life, Lee reveals herself to be a former student of psychiatry with a turbulent history. As Arthur and Lee’s relationship spins out of control, the movie looks at ideas of love, madness, and treachery.
Songs
The musical quality of Joker: Folie à Deux is among its best features. Though they deviate from conventional musical numbers, the songs are crucial in capturing Arthur and Lee’s feelings. Reflecting their turbulent states of mind, Phoenix and Gaga cover many great songs including “Get Happy” and “For Once in My Life.” Lady Gaga also included an own song called “Harlequin,” which gives her performance of Lee more nuance. Returning from the first Joker movie, Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score combines with these musical compositions to create a menacing mood.

Scenes The movie was filmed in Belleville, New Jersey, Los Angeles, and New York City among other famous sites. Gotham City is set against the rough metropolitan settings of New York once more, giving the dark, twisted world Arthur lives some feeling of authenticity.
